Autumn/Winter 2011 Newsletter – Garrydoolis School

The refurbishment of the Junior classroom took place as planned during the Summer holidays and the ceiling and walls were insulated and electrical fittings were upgraded to high modern standards. The work finished on schedule and we were able to open in September with everything in place. While the building work was in progress we purchased three Interactive Whiteboards and got those installed. We plan to host an open evening and invite parents to attend and see the new technology in action.

Niall Boland, a past pupil of the school and an employee of IBM, applied to IBM for the Kidsmart computer which is now up and running in the Junior classroom. This is a specially designed computer workstation which is geared towards the Infant classroom.

We played three matches in the 7-a-side football league. To date we have beaten Kilteely, Bohermore and Carnane which made us winners of Group one. The finals were held in Caherelly in Nov. where Garrydoolis NS were unlucky to lose out to Cloverfield NS.

Fortunately James Ryan was in a position to provide football coaching this term and he has been ably assisted by David McGuinness (Parent) who volunteered to give of his time and work with the smaller children.

The school was closed on Oct. 27th as it was used as a polling centre in the Presidential elkection.

Our annual Table Quiz took place on Friday November 11th. We enjoyed the usual support and good will on the night. Pat Cronin and Fergal Grace freely gave or their time and talents to make this the outstanding social event of the school year. A total of €930 was raised on the night.

The school is again involved in the Mulkear Life Project and Mr. Glenn Wightman visited the school and gave a presentation to the senior pupils on the importance of biodiversity in our ecosystems. In the Spring they will go on a field trip to a local river to look at the river channels and their importance for the sustainability of life.

The senior pupils did a project for Irish Aid on the topic “Caring for the Planet-feeding the world”. This has been submitted to Irish Aid.

Congratulations to 5 pupils from Garrydoolis who won art prizes in the PTDA Christmas Card competition. The prizewinners were Lisa McGuinness, Alexander Davern, Joan Beary, Conor O’Dwyer and John O’Donnell.

On Sun. 11th Dec 2011 the school will host a Cake Sale on behalf of Knockane GAA Club.

The Christmas plays are being rehearsed and we hope to present them to parents and families on the 21st and 22nd December. All board members are welcome to attend.
